Hip-hop star Missy Elliott will rap about her traumatic childhood on her new album Cookbook.

The rapper witnessed her father beat up her mother as a child in Virginia and decided to address the issue of domestic violence on her album track My Struggles, which features Mary J Blige and Grand Puba.

Missy explains: "I talked about my father being abusive to my mother - people have never heard me talk about anything like that. That brings people a little bit more personal with Missy."
