The Oscar winner's theatrical ambitions caused conflict in his native Bermondsey in south London, because everyone presumed he was pretentious or gay.

He says: "I immediately became an outcast. One, they think you've got ideas above your station. Two they think you're gay.

"And three they know you're going to be broke and they don't want to meet you in the pub because they gotta buy you a drink and they're not gonna get one back."
