Woody Allen’s eagerly-awaited London film Match Point receives its world premiere in Cannes today.

Match Point, starring actress Scarlett Johansson, will be unveiled at the festival.

Johansson has flown in to the French Riviera for the red carpet screening.

The 20-year-old was drafted in as a last minute replacement after original star Kate Winslet pulled out because she wanted to spend more time with her family.

Allen’s first movie to be set in London has been shrouded in secrecy. During filming it was referred to only as Woody Allen’s Summer Project.

Set among the English upper classes, the plot is understood to revolve around a young tennis instructor who gives lessons to a wealthy family.

He begins affairs with two women – a romantic entanglement which ends in tragedy.

Apart from Johansson, it features a largely British and Irish cast including Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Emily Mortimer, James Nesbitt, Brian Cox and Colin Salmon.

While most of Allen’s films have been set in Manhattan, Match Point makes use of London as a backdrop.

The Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge, the “Gherkin” and St Paul’s Cathedral all feature.

Allen has already announced plans for another film set in London and hopes Johansson will appear in that too.

The actress made her breakthrough as a 13-year-old in Robert Redford movie The Horse Whisperer.

In 2003 she was catapulted into the A-list with her roles in two films: Lost In Translation and Girl With A Pearl Earring.

She has three films in the offing – starring alongside Ewan McGregor in sci-fi thriller The Island, with Josh Hartnett in the adaptation of James Ellroy’s crime novel The Black Dahlia, and opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III.
