The first blockbuster of the summer from a director who knows how to bust block; and it's a timely tale since it pits Christians and Muslims in a fierce battle.

There was much controversy over the very idea of the film when it was first mooted, given the post-Twin Towers demonising of Muslims. But Scott has turned out a thoughtful and well-balanced story set around the 1185 battle for the Holy City of Jerusalem during the third Crusades.

It is, says Scott, bigger than Gladiator; and, though he diplomatically avoided saying so, it's a great deal better than Troy or Alexander.

It's a story full of action and packed with class performers, though Bloom still doesn't look right as a hunky hero, too lightweight. The support from the likes of Neeson, playing the only character who didn't actually exist during the battle, Irons and Gleeson more than compensate for Bloom and Scott once again hits all the right spots with this sweeping drama.
