Justin Timberlake is to join girlfriend Cameron Diaz in lending his voice to Shrek 3, it emerged today.
He will play Artie, King Harold’s rebellious nephew who does not want to be king.
Shrek teaches the teenager how to act like royalty in the new film, scheduled for release in May 2007.
Diaz voices Shrek’s wife, Fiona, whose pregnancy dominates much of the plot in Shrek 3.
Producer, Aron Warner, said despite their high-profile relationship, the Charlie’s Angel’s star had nothing to do with her boyfriend landing the role.
“Our desire was to get somebody who is visible and had their own persona to bring to the table,” he told USA Today.
“Justin fit that bill perfectly.”
Warner revealed that in teaching Artie to be king, Shrek has to overcome his “deep-seated fear of being a father.”
On whose baby it was, his lips were sealed. “We’ve got to leave something for a surprise,” he added.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas will all return to voice characters in the third instalment of the blockbuster animation.
