Domingo wants title role in Verdi's Boccanegra
Placido Domingo would like to make a career detour before he retires – to baritone.
The 64-year-old tenor hopes to sing the title role in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra. Domingo made the announcement during an intermission round-table following the second act of Wagner’s Die Walkuere at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Having just finished singing the role of Siegmund, Domingo appeared in full costume with a towel around his neck for the session, which was broadcast live.
Spokesman Edgar Vincent said no performance of Boccanegra had been scheduled.
Domingo’s repertoire, which already has 120 roles, will expand with his first performance of Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac next month at the Met.
