Sahara fails to amount to a hill of sand

Sahara

Director: Breck Eisner

Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Penelope Cruz, Steve Zahn, William H. Macy

Cert: 12A

Sunken treasures, a deadly virus, an African civil war, lots of sand, a bit of romance, some derring-do ... and a screenplay bogged down with not a single, small grain of originality.

We have here a cheapjack Indiana Jones and, admittedly, a half-decent cast cast adrift in a storyline so daft as to be unworthy of your precious time and money.

It's poorly directed, as well, since Eisner fails totally to get any of his performers to sparkle, or even to act with any conviction.

Even at the level of a Boy's Own yarn - 'with one mighty leap our hero was free' kind of stuff - there's nothing to sustain our interest.
