Nice work for Tommy Lee
Man of the House
Director: Stephen Herek
Cast: Tommy Lee Jones, Anne Archer, Brian Van Holt, Christina Milian
Cert: 12A
Even a fine, Oscar-winning actor like Jones is entitled to turn up in the occasional dross ... hey, the money always comes in handy for life's little luxuries!
Here, in one of those films that makes you think that some work is nice, if you can get it, the craggy TLJ plays a Texas Ranger who has to house-sit a bunch of nubile cheerleaders who are key witnesses in a murder trial ... it's a rotten job, but somebody has to do it.
It's a comedy, though the jokes are weak to the point of invisibility. It's sexist too and, even if the cheerleaders are easy on the eye (OK, so that's sexist as well, sit down and be quiet), they don't apparently lead the cheers for any acting establishment.
Everything about this one has the distinct feeling of warmed-up humour. And even the usually-reliable Jones can't make it otherwise.
