Doherty to hit the big screen

Troubled rocker Pete Doherty is being lined up to star in a film about The Clash, after being head-hunted by the British punk band's guitarist Mick Jones.

Jones, who produced both albums by Doherty's former band The Libertines, has co-written the script for Clash City Rocker.

The film is set in London in 1977 at the height of the punk era.

And Jones is determined to cast Doherty in the project as he believes he's perfect for the role of singer Ray Speed.

A source says: "Mick's convinced Pete has the right energy to pull it off because he embodies the spirit of punk rock."

But fears are rife that Doherty, who has had a well-publicised battle with his addictions to crack cocaine and heroin, is not reliable enough.

The insider adds: "If Pete can discipline himself, it will be a great success."
