Spend some time in The Garden

Not too many can find better uses for his garden than Derek Jarman.

In The Garden (Artificial Eye), using his own land as centre stage, the British director presents a series of allergorical imagery covering themes close to his heart, such as homesexuality, religion and the media.

A gorgeous visual feast that plays with the senses, The Garden is a dazzling, reflective work now given the full treatment on DVD. Extras include an interview with cinematographer Raoul Coutard.

Maeve Murphy’s Silent Grace (Guerilla Films) explores what happens when Aine (Cathleen Brady), a young criminal, ends up sharing a cell in Armagh Women’s Prison with republican leader Eileen (Orla Brady).

A surprisingly engaging film.
