Coach Carter

The true story of the basketball coach (Jackson) who controversially grounded his college team, hot tip for the California State Championships, until they got their educational grades up to scratch.

The jocks, and the neighbourhood, are miffed at being required to learn how to read and write over how to chuck a large ball through a hoop, but the coach is only doing it for their own good.

It's full of the sort of characters you'd expect to find in such a film - the decent man battling the thicko players, the moaning parents, the interfering authorities - and truth or not it never really gets us on its side; you just want the ignorant jocks to get trounced. Jackson does his best and just about succeeds; but it's a disappointing film.
