Low-budget British film Vera Drake held its own against the Hollywood blockbusters in a triumphant night at the Baftas.

Imelda Staunton beat Charlize Theron and the hotly tipped Kate Winslet to the Best Actress prize, while Mike Leigh was chosen ahead of Martin Scorsese for Best Director.
