Riding Giants

Director: Stacy Peralta

Cast: Jeff Clark, Lairn Hamilton, Greg Noll

You wonder why they do it: stick little more than an ironing board into 60ft waves and ride it to the shore on a surge of foaming water.

They do it, like climbers and mountains, because the foaming water is, well, there … and because it's challenging, exciting, nerve-shredding and well worth the rush it brings.

It certainly is in Peralta's terrific documentary on the wild world of surfing. Surfing isn't just a Stateside sport, it's a way of life and the characters in this film are larger than life.

Peralta takes us into this world and brings us men of downright courage, or mindlessness, depending on whether your only association with waves is splashing Duckie in the bath.

Taking a shower will never be the same again.
