Alfie 'one of the worst film remakes'

Jude Law film Alfie has been voted one of the worst movie remakes of all time.

Critics have been unimpressed with Law’s performance in the role made famous by Michael Caine and film fans agree the updated version is not a patch on the 1966 original.

Alfie came sixth in the Top 10 Worst Remakes poll, carried out by DVD rental firm ScreenSelect.co.uk.

The flop remake of Get Carter, with Michael Caine replaced this time by Sylvester Stallone, topped the list.

It relocated the action from Sixties Newcastle to modern day Seattle – with disastrous results.

Critics called it “pointless”, “useless” and an “incoherent mess”.

Second in the list was Gus Van Sant’s attempt to remake the Alfred Hitchcock horror Psycho for a new audience.

This year’s mega-flop Thunderbirds movie was third, followed by Bridget Fonda thriller The Assassin – a remake of the cult film La Femme Nikita.

Charlie’s Angels, starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu, came fifth.

Remakes of Planet of the Apes, Starsky and Hutch and Cape Fear all made the YouGov poll of 2,000 movie fans.

Ocean’s Eleven also showed up in the top 10, with audiences peferring the Frank Sinatra original to the update with George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

“Time after time, remakes fail to sparkle like the originals. The rehashed productions trade off fond memories of much-loved films. This poll is an indication that remakes can’t compare with films which were classics of their time.

“It also proves you just can’t beat Michael Caine,” said ScreenSelect.co.uk founder Alex Chesterman.
