Switzerland is Simply the Best - Tina
Singing legend Tina Turner says she loves Switzerland, her adopted homeland, because “it’s so strict”.
The 64-year-old star moved to Switzerland nine years ago with her boyfriend, German record company executive Erwin Bach.
She tells the Radio Times magazine: “I love that it’s so strict, and that everything runs exactly as it’s supposed to.
“I appreciate order and control. I like it that everything’s done according to the rules. This is very much my kind of place.”
The singer, who divorced musical partner Ike Turner in 1978 after an abusive marriage, says she is unlikely to tie the knot again, adding “I feel like I’ve never been married”.
“We’re like an old wedded couple anyway, so we really don’t see the need” she says of her boyfriend who is 16 years her junior.
Turner, who lives in a lakeside home in Zurich, says she has David Bowie to thank for her career taking off again after a bad patch.
In 1983, Turner’s record label decided not to resign her but wanted to take Bowie out for dinner to celebrate his new deal.
Bowie said he could not go because he was seeing his “favourite singer perform” at the Ritz.
“The bigwigs tagged along and found the place not only packed to the rafters, but with Keith Richards and Rod Stewart heading the list of celebrities already there in the audience,” Turner said.
“Luckily, it was a wonderful show, with a very special energy, and seeing it and the crowd’s reaction completely turned round how Capitol viewed me.
“It was because of David that I got another deal, from which everything else followed, and I’ll be for ever thankful to him.”
