Michael Caine's classic 1971 movie Get Carter has beaten Trainspotting to the title of best British movie of all time.

Michael Caine's classic 1971 movie Get Carter has beaten Trainspotting to the title of best British movie of all time.

The gangster film, which shows the Oscar-winning actor as ruthless killer Jack Carter, won the accolade from Britain's Total Film, followed by David Niven's wartime movie A Matter of Life and Death and Danny Boyle's Bafta-winning drama Trainspotting.

The magazine's editor Matt Mueller says: "Get Carter was slated at the time, but Caine's character is now seen as one of the greatest anti-heroes. It marks the pinnacle of his career."
