With one mighty leap we find ourselves back in the l930s for what is a comic-book, Saturday morning serial sort of film.

It's a good-looking sci-fi romp in which Paltrow plays perky New York reporter Polly Perkins who teams up with the dashing hero Sky Captain (Law) to save the world from aliens who want our raw materials.

It actually isn't based on a comic-book character but the film is based on all of the heroes and heroines we recall from those publications, made as a mix of Indy Jones, 007, Rocket Man and any permutation of the same.

It's not, however, a storyline that holds together. Such films should have their tongues firmly in their cheeks, should be slyly knowing; and should have a large degree of wit and charm. Sky Captain, blessed as it is with such a sterling cast, has none of said.
