Spielberg awarded Legion D'Honneur

Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg was awarded France’s Legion d’Honneur today.

French President Jacques Chirac bestowed the prestigious award on Spielberg at a ceremony at the head of state’s Elysee Palace in Paris.

Napoleon Bonaparte created the Legion d’Honneur in 1802. It recognises military, cultural, scientific or social contributions to France, including by those who aren’t French citizens.

Spielberg entered the legion as a knight, the lowest of five rankings. His wife Kate Capshaw, who appeared in his film “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” and actress Gwyneth Paltrow accompanied Spielberg at the Elysee.

Spielberg won best picture and directing Oscars in 1993 for “Schindler’s List” and another directing Oscar for ”Saving Private Ryan” in 1998.
