Slick Diesel action but Chronicles do little else
Director: David Twohy
Cast: Vin Diesel, Thandie Newton, Karl Urban, Linus Roache, Keith David, Judi Dench
Cert: 12.
In a land far, far away; in a time that time forgot … Vin Diesel seeks the answer to who has it in for him.
Most of us, it might be argued.
This is one of those curious films set nowhere in particular. Diesel, climbing the slippery pole of Hollywood fame as an all-action hero, follows up the reasonably successful Pitch Black with an attempt to give the Riddick character a little more depth. He doesn’t quite make it, though he is not helped by a wooden script.
He is a man on the run and with a mission, to find out who is setting him up. On the side there is a gang of uncouth fellows known as the Necromongers distract him with their unsocial behaviour.
It’s one of those heavy-going films which takes itself really, really seriously … with absolutely no justification.
There is action, to be sure, but there is no reasoning behind what is going on.
