New inquiry launched into MacColl's death

Mexican authorities have reopened an inquiry into the death of British singer Kirsty MacColl who died after she was struck by a speedboat propeller while diving in a nature reserve in the Caribbean four years ago.

Three witnesses have now come forward with new evidence which casts doubt on claims deckhand Juan Jose Cem Yam, 28, was controlling the boat at the time of the Children of the Revolution singer's death, which has led prosecutors to re-examine the case.

MacColl's mother Jean Newlove also uncovered apparent inconsistencies in witness statements and findings at the original trial and has submitted legal documents alleging one or more witnesses may have committed perjury.

The MacColls' lawyer Demetrio Guerro says: "We will know within a matter of weeks whether the authorities have decided to press a case on the perjury allegations. If they do, and the people are found guilty, the original trial would be declared null and void."

MacColl is perhaps best remembered for her collaboration with The Pogues in the hit Fairytale of New York.
