Redford suffers for his art

Veteran actor Robert Redford suffered for his latest film The Clearing - because his claustrophobia played havoc in scenes where he was bound, gagged and dumped in the boot of a car.

In the movie, Redford was forced to undergo brutal abduction scenes, when his character is kidnapped by a childhood friend, played by Willem Dafoe.

He said: "I am very claustrophobic. I do not like to sit too long in a chair. I do not like to be confined.

"All my life I had a strong urge for movement and freedom so the challenge was having to play a character who was literally imprisoned for a great part of the film.

"I thought that would be interesting to see how that felt. I hated it but that was good."
