American travel writer Bill Bryson became the unlikely winner of the world’s most prestigious science book award.

Mr Bryson is better known for his humorous descriptions of the United States and Britain than disentangling the finer points of cosmology and quantum physics.

But A Short History of Nearly Everything, his first stab at science writing, won the coveted Aventis Prize.
