More than 110,000 rock fans were expected to descend on Phoenix Park today for a mega-concert headlined by the Pixies and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

The summer gig will witness the Pixies reunited for the first time in 10 years on Irish soil.

As one of rock’s most iconic groups, they revolutionised the late 80s rock scene with classics such as Surfer Rosa and Doolittle.

They will perform their only Irish date as special guests of the Chilli Peppers, in Dublin as part of a European tour which coincides with the release of their Greatest Hits album and new DVD – Red Hot Chilli Peppers: Live At Slane Concert.

The Thrills and Groove Armada will also take to the stage as part of the musical extravaganza.

Forecasters have predicted a dry day for Dublin, with cloud and the possibility of slight drizzle.

Access to the park will be restricted and public gates will remain closed until tomorrow morning. Parking is available at Castleknock College and Somerton car-park, Castleknock. A park-and-ride service will run from the Irish Kennel Club at Cloghran, Swords.

Gates open at 11.30am for the concert, which is scheduled to run from 2pm until 10.30pm.
