Former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff was busted in Los Angeles at the weekend on suspicion of drunken driving and spent a night in the slammer before being released on Sunday morning.

The 51-year-old actor checked himself into California’s Betty Ford rehab clinic two years ago following reports of his alleged binge drinking.

On Saturday night he was arrested at 11.20pm outside a MacDonald’s drive-in restaurant, and reports suggest he will face misdemeanour charges.

Hasselhoff, best known for playing lifeguard Mitch Buchannon in the long-running Baywatch TV series, was released on $18,000 (€15,000) bail.

His first stint in rehab came after he reportedly suffered alcohol poisoning following a heavy drinking session.

Hasselhoff is said to be trying to resurrect his career by making a film based on Knight Rider, the TV show about a talking car that first made him famous.

He’s also supposedly making a rap record with ICE-T, using the name Hassel the Hoff.
