Melanie Griffith helped save the life of her ex-husband, Scarface star Steve Bauer after he phoned their son Alex from a Vancouver hotel room in suicidal despair over his heroin habit.

From his days partying with pals like Jack Nicholson and Alex’s godfather Warren Beatty, Bauer hit rock bottom as a junkie three years ago. “I owe my life to my son and Melanie,” he told me.

“If it wasn’t for them I’d probably be dead now. I called Al up in the early hours of the morning at about 3am and I was rambling and talking a lot and he just knew there was something badly wrong.

"He told Melanie and she sent someone over to get me and make an intervention. I was so embarrassed to let people know I was a 40-odd-year-old man and I was addicted to heroin.

“Anyway, these people got me out and took me away and told me not to worry any more. Melanie paid for me to go to a really good rehab place in the desert and therapy helped me a lot. I owe it all to them. And I will never forget it.”

Bauer’s Scarface co-star Al Pacino is helping his old friend get back on his feet – the two are still close.
