Brando's Godfather voted greatest film character
Marlon Brando’s Mafia boss Vito Corleone has been voted the greatest movie character of all time.
Brando’s Oscar-winning turn in 1972 classic The Godfather topped a poll by United States film experts.
Humphrey Bogart as Fred C Dobbs in 1948 flick The Treasure of the Sierra Madre came second, while his most famous role – as Rick Blaine in Casablanca – was only 19th.
Gone With The Wind heroine Scarlett O’Hara, played by Vivien Leigh, was third, ahead of Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates in Psycho.
Sean Connery’s 007, in his first James Bond role in Dr No, was fifth.
Other characters to make the top 20 included Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley in Alien, and Sir Anthony Hopkins’ cannibal killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.
Computer-generated character Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, voiced by British actor Andy Serkis, is in ninth place.
The poll was carried out by US movie magazine Premiere.
