George and Alex Best start divorce process

Soccer legend George Best and his estranged wife Alex were expected to start divorce proceedings today.

The couple’s case is listed for a hearing before District Judge Harper at the family division of the High Court in London.

Best’s agent Phil Hughes confirmed that papers would be presented to the judge today but said the proceedings would take some time.

The case is listed as ‘Best A J v G’ – one of 30 divorce hearings at the court this morning.

The couple’s nine-year marriage hit the rocks after the former Manchester United star started binge drinking, not long after his liver transplant.

The former air hostess described how Best, 57, smashed her car windows when she came home late following a magazine shoot.

After confirming she wanted a divorce, Alex told fellow contestant Jordan: “I haven’t caused it which is another nice thing to know. It’s not my fault.

“It’s a shame. It’s really sad but c’est la vie.”
