UK composer Gregg dies aged 89
Hubert Gregg, the composer of Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner, has died at the age of 89, it was announced today.
Gregg wrote the tune in 1944 after watching German doodlebugs flying over his home during the Second World War.
He was also known as an actor, director, author, broadcaster and stage performer and had been a BBC Radio 2 presenter since 1972.
BBC Radio 2 controller Lesley Douglas said today: “Hubert Gregg was not only an extraordinary person, but he was also a unique broadcaster.
“As a musician, he was responsible for memorable songs such as Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner…he painted a picture of a bygone era with wit and style."
