The maker of Footballers’ Wives defended the ITV1 drama against claims by the Archbishop of Canterbury that it reflected all that was wrong with the morality of Britain.

Brian Park, the programme’s executive producer, replied to Archbishop Rowan Williams’ comments that the greed, treachery and adultery of the show’s characters was a piercingly accurate parable of attitudes in 21st-century Britain.

Mr Park said: “There is a morality there (in the programme) that hasn’t been picked up on by the Archbishop”.
