Brown freed after paying support cash

Singer Bobby Brown has been released from a Massachusetts jail after spending a night behind bars for failing to pay €59,000 in child support.

Brown was released after the Norfolk Probate and Family Court received the money.

"I thought it was paid," Brown told reporters as he left, calling the matter a "misunderstanding".

But Brown was due back in Family Court - the judge had ordered him to return after the child support was paid.

On Wednesday, Family Court Judge Paula Carey found Brown in contempt of court and ordered him to be jailed for 90 days unless or until he could come up with the money.

Brown had said that he was unable to pay the child support he owed for the children, now 12 and 14, that he fathered with Kim Ward.

Brown had been released three days early from a jail in DeKalb County, Georgia, so he could attend the Massachusetts hearing.

In Georgia, Brown had been serving a 60-day sentence for breaking his probation on a drink-drive charge.

He also faces assault charges after he allegedly hit his wife, singer Whitney Houston, leaving her with a bruised cheek and a cut lip. He is scheduled to appear in court in Fulton County, Georgia, on May 5.

Brown left R&B group New Edition in the late 1980s for a solo career. His hits include My Prerogative and Every Little Step, but he has become more famous for his numerous brushes with the law and his turbulent marriage with Houston. The couple live in the Atlanta area.
