Sheridan nominations a coup for Irish film
Screen Producers Ireland (SPI) have said that it is a tremendous achievement for Ireland that the film In America, produced and directed by Jim Sheridan, has received three Oscar nominations.
The movie was nominated in the categories of Best Actress (Samantha Morton), Best Supporting Actor (Djimon Hounsou) and Best Original Screenplay (Jim Sheridan, Kirsten Sheridan and Naomi Sheridan).
According to SPI, the nominations are an indication of the Irish film industry's ability to compete on the world stage and a huge endorsement of Ireland’s film industry.
They said it proves Ireland has the talent and creativity to produce films on a par with any other country in the world.
Commenting on the nominations, Andrew Lowe, Chair of the Film Committee, SPI, said: "In America was predominantly shot in Ireland using a highly skilled Irish crew of some 200 people. It will act as another major proof point of what Ireland has to offer, both as a location for film, and as a hotbed of talent.
“For an Irish film to receive three Oscar nominations is a phenomenal achievement. SPI would like to extend its warmest congratulations to Jim, Kirsten and Naomi and wish them every success for a win on Oscar night," Mr Lowe said.
"This achievement also shows that the Government's faith in Irish film by extending Section 481 is to be applauded and is merited.
“Section 481 funding was crucial to ensure that the film, which was set in Manhattan was actually shot predominantly in Dublin.
“The success of In America shows that our small country can be players on the global film stage and serves to highlight the progressive decision by the Government in December last, to extend the tax incentive for a further three years and increase the cap on film investment."
