Sorry Beyonce, we can't handle this

The Fighting Temptations

Director: Jonathan Lynn

Cast: Cuba Gooding Jnr, Beyonce Knowles, Steve Harvey, Mike Epps

Cert: 12.

Surprisingly, in her first 'serious' acting stint, the delicious Beyonce emerges largely intact from the wreckage of this poor musical comedy/romance/drama/whatever.

Its throwback plot of saving a struggling group of musicians - in this case a small-town's gospel choir - has been done so many times, in various forms, that if there is anything new to be found in the idea it won't be found here.

Gooding plays a New York advertising exec whose past catches up with him.

He returns to his hometown in Georgia to find that an aunt has left him lots of folding stuff … on the understanding that he turns around the fortunes of the dire local church choir.

He enlists some pretty dubious types, he offends the church regulars, we all laugh (though not a great deal).

Beyonce plays a single mum having problems with the stiff-collar locals, there are some goodish tunes, roll credits and let's go for a stiff drink.

This is a temptation we can all fight with ease.

Star Rating: 1/5.
