Glen Campbell pleads not guilty to assault

Singer Glen Campbell today pleaded not guilty to an assault charge following an incident with a US police officer after an alleged hit-and-run collision near his home in Phoenix, Arizona.

Campbell, 67, was accused of kneeing an officer after he was arrested on November 24 for allegedly striking another car and leaving the scene. Nobody was hurt.

He waived his right to a preliminary hearing and pleaded before Judge Gregory Martin in Maricopa County Superior Court.

The singer also faces charges of extreme drink driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Those charges are being handled by Phoenix Municipal Court.

Extreme drunken driving applies to a blood-alcohol level of 0.15% or higher. Breath tests on Campbell showed he had a 0.20 blood-alcohol level at the time of his arrest, according to court documents. The legal limit for Arizona drivers is 0.08%.

Campbell has blamed his arrest on the accidental mixing of alcohol and a prescription anti-anxiety drug.

Judge Martin also granted a motion requesting that Campbell be allowed to travel but ordered that he continue to submit to drug and alcohol screening.

Campbell’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 15.

The singer’s hits include Rhinestone Cowboy, Galveston, Gentle on My Mind and By the Time I Get to Phoenix.
