Star's gun request shocks hotel staff

International opera star Dame Kiri Te Kanawa shocked staff at a city centre hotel when she asked where she could store her guns, it emerged tonight.

The acclaimed singer is understood to have arrived at the Holiday Inn in West Nile Street, Glasgow, on Tuesday with several double-barrelled shotguns.

But the Maori, who had brought the weapons with her for a shooting holiday, was told the hotel had nowhere safe to store them.

Dame Kiri was then taken to the city’s Stewart Street police station where she left the guns overnight.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said tonight: “Dame Kiri surrendered her firearms as the hotel did not have anywhere secure.

“She was on a shooting holiday and all her documents were in order.

“There was no security alert.”

Dame Kiri collected her guns on Wednesday, the spokesman added.
