Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken publicly for the first time since announcing she is pregnant with Coldplay singer Chris Martin’s baby.
The Shakespeare In Love star said she found it “weird” that strangers kept congratulating her on the news.
Her appearance on American television came amid rumours that she and Martin, 26, may have already tied the knot.
The pair have been tight-lipped about their private lives ever since their relationship became public last year.
Now gossip columns in America are filled with the news that Paltrow, 31, was seen wearing an engagement and wedding ring earlier this week.
She dismissed them as “friendship bands”.
But the New York Post reported that the couple were set to have a “wedding reception” at a Manhattan hotel on Sunday.
Speaking on the Jay Leno show, Paltrow said: “I like to keep my private life to myself.”
But she revealed why she decided to break the news of her pregnancy.
“Its been a secret for a while. We thought ’Well, we’ll tell everybody and just make a nice clean statement’,” she said.
She went on: “There are all these strangers who are like, ’Congratulations’, and I’m like ’oh’.
“It’s a little bit weird but it’s lovely that people care. It’s great but it’s strange.”
Paltrow is expecting her baby in the summer, her publicist revealed on Wednesday.
In recent weeks Paltrow has dropped a string of hints that she wishes to wed.
Speaking to the BBC’s Michael Parkinson recently Paltrow said she “hoped” to marry.
Pressed on whether she meant to Martin, she said: “I’m the wrong person to ask – ask him.”
Paltrow, who splits her time between New York and London, told the USA Today newspaper recently she was ready to settle down and focus on “partners and babies“.
Earlier this year, the couple were reported to be preparing to marry at a property owned by film director Steven Spielberg at The Hamptons in New York.
It is also believed they have started house-hunting in the Belsize Park area of north London.
Neighbours in the area would include Kate Winslet, Kate Moss and Helena Bonham Carter.
Martin already has a flat in the area but is said to spend much of his time at Paltrow’s house in Belgravia, central west London.
