Hollywood pair ‘lack tools’ for stage, says Broadway co-star

The veteran actor Ned Beatty has given his outspoken opinions about the talents of his co-stars in the Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’s play Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.

Beatty, who plays Big Daddy, tells the New York Times that Jason Patric and Ashley Judd are ill-equipped for their roles of the brooding Brick and Maggie, his long-suffering wife.

He says of Judd: “She is a sweetie and yet she doesn’t have a whole lot of tools. But she works hard.”

Of Patric, he says: “He’s gotten better all the time, but his is a different journey.”

Beatty was nostalgic for the cast of the play’s London production, in which he starred and was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance.

“I lucked out because I drew Brendan Fraser,” he said, speaking of the actor who played Brick.

“He’s great at stagecraft and knows how to go from the beginning to the middle to the end.

“That can be lacking in what we’re doing.”
