Photographs in a magazine led producer Richard Zanuck to cast British actors Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor as the same character in his new film, the reality-fantasy fable Big Fish.
The pictures, published in a 1997 magazine, were of Finney from 1963 when he starred in Tom Jones and a contemporary photograph of McGregor.
“The resemblance was remarkable,” Zanuck told journalists in New York. “There it was, the same smile, the same dimple, the same sparkle in the eyes. They looked eerily and brilliantly alike.”
Finney plays a teller of tall tales about his colourful life as a young man, played by McGregor, whose exploits included adventures with giants, werewolves, conjoined Korean lounge singers and a big fish that refuses to be caught.
