US country singer Glen Campbell was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after he left the scene of a minor vehicle accident, police said.

Campbell was also being held on suspicion of hit-and-run, and aggravated assault on a police officer. Sergeant Randy Force said that as Campbell was being processed at the police station in Phoenix, Arizona, he kneed an officer in the thigh.

The two-car crash happened yesterday at a Phoenix intersection, Sgt Force said. No one was hurt, but afterward Campbell’s BMW continued on.

A witness followed the car, called police on a mobile phone and directed them to a home in the Biltmore area, he said.

“Officers contacted the driver of that BMW who was Glen Campbell,” he said. “Based on his appearance and demeanour, they believed he was intoxicated and took him into custody.”

Campbell was being held on suspicion of “extreme” drunken driving Sgt Force said.

The entertainer was booked into a Phoenix jail and was expected to make an initial appearance before a judge last night.

In his booking photo, Campbell was seen smiling and wearing an Arizona Diamondbacks polo shirt.
