Julie Andrews and John Cleese hit it off like old friends when they met for the first time in a recording studio to provide the voices for the King and Queen -parents of Cameron Diaz’s Princess Fiona – in Shrek 2.

“It was a wonderful recording session. I’m such a fan,” Andrews told syndicated columnist Marilyn Beck.

“We were almost rolling around laughing. It seemed to me we’d been friends for years.”

Andrews, who has just started work on the sequel to The Princess Diaries, may also soon be a Broadway director.

A revival of The Boyfriend, which she directed on Long Island in the summer, is reportedly heading for Broadway, reports Beck.
