Guitarist Bruce Kulick was shot in the right thigh by a man who opened fire in Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles.
Another bullet grazed his head. He said: “I heard the bullet whizz by my ear.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said a 21-year-old man started shooting into a crowd of several hundred people after an argument yesterday.
Kulick, 49, and another man, who were standing outside the Rainbow Room club, were injured.
The gunman was brought down by bystanders who detained him until police arrived.
He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He also needed hospital treatment for injuries he sustained when he was tackled to the ground.
Kulick was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, and later released, the hospital said.
Kulick said: “It happened very quickly.
“I looked down and saw there was a hole in my leather pants.
Kulick was the lead guitarist of Kiss which is famous for its members’ elaborate face paint from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s.
