Tarantino may give up part of profits

Quentin Tarantino is reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Miramax to give up some of his profits from his new film Kill Bill.

The money will go to pay for increased marketing costs caused by splitting the film in two.

Kill Bill ran over three hours so Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein decided to make it into two films, Kill Bill Vol 1, which has just been released, and Vol 2, which will be released in February.

Miramax expect to spend €56m on advertising and publicity for the two films, while they would only have spent €35m on one, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Tarantino’s agent, Mike Simpson, told the newspaper that Tarantino and his producing partner Lawrence Bender are close to a deal with Miramax and are cooperating because they want to ensure the studio will spend aggressively to market the two films.

“We could do nothing, but we wouldn’t be acting like a good partner,” said Simpson, “and Miramax would have good reason to feel like they needed to hold back and look out for themselves.”

Kill Bill, which the studio intended to cost a little more than €42m, ended up costing more than €60m.
