'Camp' - trying too hard to make it big
Todd Graff
Joanna Chilcoat, Robin de Jesus, Daniel Letterle, Steven Cutts
12.
It's summer and the kids are on their way to camp, to sing and dance and romance.
In a film that tries too hard to be fun, the problems lie in the unoriginal script, some awful songs and characters we simply can't relate to
It's a curious film in many ways, not overlooking that it is based on what actually happens at such showbiz camps where wannabe young 'stars' strut their stuff. Mainly it just doesn't entertain us.
There is too much and too little going on and there is a weak subplot which Mickey and Judy would have shunned back in the days when they were putting on Broadway-style shows in the barn.
Everybody tries hard, but the effort alone isn't enough.
