Bookmakers have made Arnold Schwarzenegger a slim favourite to win the California governor election.
America's Line has made it a 2-7 sure thing that the incumbent governor, Gray Davis, will have to face a new ballot.
It has also placed Republican Schwarzenegger as 7-5 to be the state's next governor.
With his wealthy supporters and high-profile advisers, Schwarzenegger is the "initial favourite right out of the box," said Benjamin Eckstein, America's Line president.
Eckstein characterized Schwarzenegger's advantage over Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, an 8-5 favourite, as paper thin.
Davis, a Democrat, is a 5-2 choice to retain his seat Oct. 7.
Among the celebrity candidates, Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and actor Gary Coleman were 500-1 to reach the governor's mansion in Sacramento.
The odds were set for entertainment value only. Nevada's sports books aren't allowed to accept wagers on elections or events other than sports contests and races.
