Confidence: Flashback failure from all-star cast

15.
Now that's what you'd call an all-star cast: in search of a screenplay.
Burns plays a conman, first seen in a pool of blood in a Los Angeles street, whose arrival on the pavement is traced in flashback. He has been taking money from an accountant with connections to a criminal boss (Hoffman).
It should have been a much better film, but the weak screenplay by Doug Jung lets everybody down. There is no depth of characterisation, no proper forward motion to the film's development and, even if the performances try to rise above such disadvantages, the film fails to gather momentum.
It gives the impression that a group of good actors merely came together to mug their way to another fat cheque, and to hell with the vehicle itself. There is a feeling throughout of a film not being taken quite seriously enough.
