Rock legend Jerry Lee seeks sixth divorce

Rock'n'roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis has filed for divorce from his sixth wife.

But Kerrie, his wife of 20 years. is countersuing.

She claims he earns more than $1m (€890,000) a year “as a famous rock and roll singer and living legend” yet is not providing financial support for her or their 16-year-old son, Jerry Lee Lewis III.

She also claims her husband has cut off their medical insurance or allowed it to lapse.

Kerrie Lewis claimed she has not been able to get into the couple’s 40 acre ranch home in Nesbit, Mississippi, since May, when, after returning from a trip, she found the gates chained and locks changed.

The 40-year-old claims the house is in her name. The mansion has a piano shaped swimming pool and is open to the public.

Visitors are given a guided tour to see all the gold records, pianos, memorabilia items and all the cars and motorcycles.

Kerrie Lewis also accuses the singer and his daughter, Phoebe, of diverting the marital assets into a company.

She asked for an injunction ordering Lewis to pay unspecified child support, temporary alimony and all medical bills.

Dubbed The Killer, Lewis, 67, is known for such hits as Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On.

The controversial rocker’s career was almost ended in 1958 when, on a tour of Britain, it was discovered he had married his 14-year-old cousin.

Cousins or second cousins getting married was a common practice in the rural deep south of the US in the Fifties.

The scandal nearly ruined Jerry Lee’s career. He was forced to leave Britain and when he got back to the US, his records were being ripped from store shelves, his appearances cancelled and his record sales declined.

But he survived to become one of rock'n'roll's greats.

Jerry Lee Lewis once said, “When they look back on me, I want ’em to remember me not for all my wives, although I’ve had a few, and certainly not for any mansions or high livin’ money I made and spent.

"I want ’em to remember me simply for my music”.
