Catch Me If You Can is the true story of teenager Frank Abagnale (Leonardo Di Caprio) who, thanks to his father’s positive thinking, believes that the image we portray can more than make up for any deficiencies that lie within.

Taking this to the extreme, Frank leaves the boredom of school life behind and is on his way to exciting careers as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer — all before his 21st birthday.

He doesn’t let small things like qualifications and experience get in the way of his dreams, and when he needs some extra cash to finance his high-flying life he starts to forge cheques.

He quickly becomes a bit of an expert — using PanAm logos from toy planes to forge company cheques. Soon he has a bank account to match his jet-set life.

Frank’s cheque bouncing soon comes to the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) who sets out in hot pursuit of the young conman. With Steven Spielberg leading the way,

Catch Me If You Can is a well-balanced piece of escapist entertainment. Both Hanks and Di Caprio are ideally suited for their respective roles, the latter rising well to the challenge of portraying the intelligent but naïve young conman.

This one is worth catching.
