Law and disorder in 'Dark Blue'

Dark Blue

Director: Ron Shelton

Cast: Kurt Russell, Brendan Gleeson, Ving Rhames, Scott Speedman, Lolita Davidovich

Cert: 15.

The mean streets of Los Angeles just keep getting meaner.

Here, in a powerful film set in the world of the LAPD, we meet cops whose morality covers a wide spectrum; the good, the bad and the downright ugly. The guys on the street fighting a brutal war (and sometimes taking what they can from it) and the suits upstairs making with the political in-fighting. All human life is there.

It's a superior thriller in which Russell plays a sort of anti-hero, a cop whose questionable methods may be necessary, and Speedman plays his increasingly disturbed new partner. Russell is excellent, quite excellent.

We have here a strong film of almost documentary authenticity.

Star Rating: 4/5
