British soap actress Laura Sadler was fighting for life in hospital today after falling from a balcony.

The 22-year-old, who plays Sandy Harper in BBC1’s Holby City, was said to be in a “critical” condition after she was found at the foot of a house in Holland Park, west London early yesterday.

Actor George Calil, who plays her on-screen boyfriend, was last night released on police bail pending further inquiries after he was arrested in connection with the incident yesterday.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “Police were called by ambulance staff at 6.30am to reports that a woman had fallen from a second floor balcony.

“The victim, who is believed to be in her early 20s, was taken by ambulance to the new Charing Cross Hospital where her condition is understood to be critical.”

He added: “A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. He has since been released on police bail to return in mid-July pending further inquiries.”

Calil plays Sandy’s drug dealer boyfriend Sean Hunt in the hit medical drama, a spin-off from the hospital series Casualty, which attracts millions of viewers each week

Sadler, who was born on Christmas Day and raised in London, decided on a career in acting after being inspired by the likes of Marilyn Monroe.

The star first set off on her dream at the age of six, before hitting television screens in cult children’s programme Grange Hill.

She has also appeared on TV in Jane Eyre, Inspector Morse, Intimate Relations, Ruth Rendall Mysteries and Belfry Witches.
