Eminem shines in gritty 8 Mile
8 Mile is set in the gritty slums of Detroit, where young factory worker Jimmy “Rabbit” Smith (Eminem) has split with his girlfriend and moved in with his mom (Kim Basinger) and her loser boyfriend Greg (Michael Shannon).
Jimmy dreams of one day making it big as a rap star, but he’s got a few small problems standing in his way — he’s white and he freezes in front of big crowds.
But, with the help of his best friend Future (Mekhi Phifer) and new girlfriend Alex (Britany Murphy) he continues on his quest for fame and fortune.
He doesn’t really have much of a choice, if you don’t have a dream on the mean streets of
Detroit, you don’t have anything.
Eminem does surprisingly well on his acting debut.
An acknowledged musical genius, he seems very much at home in front of the cameras in a film many have claimed is more autobiographical than the controversial rapper would like to admit.
