Led Zeppelin top US album chart again after 24 years

Veteran British rock band Led Zeppelin have topped the United States album chart for the first time in 24 years.

Their triple-CD live album, How The West Was Won, went straight in at number one after selling more than 154,000 copies.

The band last occupied the top spot in 1979 with the album In Through The Out Door.

How The West Was Won features recordings of gigs at the Los Angeles Forum and the Long Beach Arena in 1972.

It includes classic tracks like Stairway To Heaven, Whole Lotta Love and a 25-minute version of Dazed And Confused.

The band’s double-DVD, which covers their live performances from the Royal Albert Hall in 1970 to Knebworth in 1979, plus rare interviews and promotional clips, also topped the music video charts this week.

Led Zeppelin, renowned for their on-the-road excess, split in 1980 following the death of drummer John Bonham.

But the remaining members – frontman Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones – reunited in 1985 for Live Aid.

They had a UK Top 20 hit in 1997 with the re-release of Whole Lotta Love.
